How To Hang Pictures With Those Annoying Double Hooks On The Back

The Chronicles of Home: How to hang a picture with those annoying double hooks on the back IN FIVE MINUTES!

Tell me you've been in this situation too:

You see exactly the picture/mirror you've been on the hunt for, you buy it and rush it home, so excited to hang it in its place, and then flip it over and groan when you see it has a set of double hooks on the back.

Because these hooks are pretty much never exactly the same distance from the top of the frame, so you wind up hurtling down a good 30-40 minutes of frustrated measuring, trying to make sure you hang your picture exactly level, and you feel like you have, then you pop it onto your carefully placed wall hooks and it's horribly crooked.

No?

Well I have been down that road many times and finally, finally, had a light bulb go off that it didn't have to be this hard.  Not even close.

Here's what you'll need:

  • metal hanging wire
  • wire cutters
  • one wall hook

And here are the four super easy steps that will take you about five minutes and result in a perfectly hung picture every time.

  1. Pull a section of hanging wire straight from the coil it usually comes in.
  2. Slip it through one of the hooks and bend it over.
  3. Wrap the tail around the rest of the wire until you have it all wrapped up. Pull to the other side and repeat, using the wire cutters to cut away any extra.
  4. Measure the horizontal center point of where you want your picture to hang, and hammer a picture hanging hook into the wall
Slip the wire over the wall hook, adjust to level the picture, and you are done!

No swearing, no frustration, no lost hour of your life.

And what room is this, you might be wondering?  This is the powder room I mentioned the other day.  I bought supplies for the chair rail and wall treatment this week and the piece I needed to hang the new light fixture arrived yesterday.

If you read that post, you'll notice this mirror is a lot different than the one I thought I was going to put in the powder room, but when I spotted it in all of its lacquered, oversized goodness, I knew it was perfect for the space.  I asked my five year old what she thought of it and she said, "Well...I don't really like the black mirror against the black walls."

Smart girl :)  I can't wait to get rid of the dark walls, they're just not working for me in here.

But still, I'd say even a black mirror against black walls is an improvement from no mirror at all!
