DIY Upholstered Screens...In Process

When I saw the announcement about this spring's edition of the Pinterest Challenge, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  Remember this failed project from about a month ago?

 

I started on upholstered folding screens for my aunt during a week at my parents' house and wound up ripping the whole thing apart.

And it never feels good to fail and have to redo something, but it's always worth it when you come up with a new idea and it's better than the first.  And that's what I think I have here.

I saw these nursery photos on Kristin's blog recently and my eye went straight to the upholstered screens behind the crib (no longer available at World Market).

I pinned it right away and my wheels started turning on my failed screens project.  I loved the nailheads (of course, don't you know me at all??), but also thought the shaped top was a nice detail.

So I got to work on a new design and have been diligently plugging away at naptimes the past week when I was hit almost simultaneously with a nasty head cold AND I nearly cut the top of my left thumb off making dinner Saturday.  So those two things combined have slowed my pace and, unfortunately, I don't have a finished project to share at the Pinterest Challenge today.

But the spirit is still here, actually making something that I pinned, and I will have these finished by the weekend when my parents will be visiting because I am determined to send the screens back with them to Pennsylvania to give to my aunt.

There will be three panels in the finished screen, and here's what's left to be done.

I went with a different style curve at the top than my pinned image and also added a curve to the bottom.

I really love the Asian-inspired fabric - Sultan's Robe by Waverly.  The background is a soft grey blue and it's just really interesting, colorful and muted at the same time.

The backs of the screens are covered in a solid ivory fabric and I'll be covering all those staples with gimp trim.
