{DIY} Lacquered Tray

I popped this little project together a few weeks ago but only just got around to photographing it yesterday.  I don't know if it's the onset of summer or just trying to keep all the balls in the air lately but my days feel like they are moving faster than ever.  It sure did feel good to get one project checked off the "to photograph" list, though.

For this DIY lacquered tray I used all scrap materials I had from other projects so it kind of cost me $0.  Even better, right?  Scott, I think, especially appreciated the bottom line on this one :)

I cut a piece of plywood in a rectangle and used some of that great Target paper I had leftover from my office bookshelves project to cover the top.  I used gloss ModPodge to glue the paper to the plywood and then pretty thickly coated the top to protect the paper and give it a glossy finish.

Then I cut four pieces of pine 1x4s with 45º angled corners to make the sides of my tray, spray painted them with glossy black paint, and attached them to the sides of the plywood using a nail gun.

For the handles, I recycled the old cabinet hardware from the Shaker style makeover on those office built ins and attached them to the sides of the tray.

I like how the tray rounds out the other pieces on the X base console table but I'm also imagining it will be a functional item that we can put drinks on when we have people over to protect that rustic finish on the table from any water rings!

The lacquered tray can also easily be moved from place to place if we want to use it as a drink tray on the coffee table, screened porch, or deck when we're entertaining this summer.

I'm really pleased with this little guy, especially for a project made all with leftover bits I had lying around.
